THE LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE

Living Future’s Living Building Challenge Logo

is a certification program offered by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), designed as a framework for the ethical construction of buildings. The Living Building Challenge (LBC) was founded with two main goals: to simplify the certification process for sustainable buildings and to create a difference in the scale of mainstream building certifications by allowing smaller projects to be recognized as sustainable.

ILFI most recently launched LBC 4.o, a holistic program committed to improving sustainability efforts in the interior and infrastructure of both new and existing buildings. This new model evaluates architecture projects through seven performance categories: Place, Water, Energy, Health & Happiness, Materials, Equity and Beauty. Each category is subdivided into Imperatives, which may be applied to any conceivable building, of any scale and any location. Companies may earn this certification when requirements from all seven categories have been met.
