RESPONSIBLE MICA INITIATIVE

Responsible Mica Initiative Logo

is a global coalition for action composed of multiple organizations committed to establishing a fair, responsible and sustainable mica supply chain. The initiative specifically focuses on India, where RMI is working to eliminate unacceptable working conditions and eradicate child labor. Mica is 37 minerals that occur in a layer/platelike structure, commercial variants that are popular include muscovite and phlogopite. These are common ingredients in beauty products.

To become a certified member, companies must map the source of mica in their products to their exporters/mines in India. Their Supply Chain mapping and Workplace Standards program pillar is specifically designed to attack poor labor conditions and forced/child labor in mica collecting and processing industries. Each participant of the supply chain must adopt a RMI certified workplace environment, health, safety and fair labor practices that include a ban on child labor. Similarly, the villages that provide the workforce for these mines are empowered to access educational resources for children, better health care, alternative means of livelihood (to reduce economic dependency on mica) and government social programs. RMI also encourages the creation of laws and regulations to govern all aspects of the mica industry, and establish a responsible and sustainable supply chain.
