RAINFOREST ALLIANCE

Alliance certification can be awarded to a business or product, third-party auditors must thoroughly assess the impact on forests, the climate, human rights and the livelihoods of farmers and workers from rural communities. Rainforest Alliance primarily certifies agricultural and forestry products.

In order for a product to qualify for certification, a minimum of 90% of the ingredients must be certified (with the exception of herbal teas and palm oils, due to limited supply of herbal ingredients). This sourcing method is called “mass balance,” meaning that all certified and non-certified ingredients are mixed together somewhere in transit or production of the end product. This system is helpful to companies, farmers and consumers in increasing sustainability efforts.

The seal of Rainforest Alliance is the red-eyed tree frog, chosen because of its role as a bioindicator. Red-eyed tree frogs are extremely sensitive to environmental changes, meaning that a healthy frog population indicates a healthy environment.
