Linen Tales
Linen Tales is a family business that first showcased and sold products from its founder’s home, a 16th-century building in Lithuania. Now selling globally, Linen Tales offers bedding, tabletop goods, kitchen linen, and more. Despite their expansion, each product is handmade in Lithuania by a small manufacturing team. This company is rooted in the Lithuanian practice of flax cultivation and processing, a tradition that dates back several thousands of years. While flax cultivation requires five times more effort than most grains, the company explains why linen is more sustainable than alternative fibers: “Linen is made from the flax plant, which requires fewer resources to grow like water or pesticides compared to widely used cotton. When the plant is harvested, different parts of it are used for making various products other than linen fabric, such as twines, ropes, and flax seeds which are used as food supplements for their health-boosting properties.” Linen production requires fewer resources and results in a plethora of useful byproducts.
At the heart of the business is a mission supporting ethical and sustainable production. Linen Tales ensures that no toxic chemicals are used in the making of its linens. Furthermore, by cutting their fabric carefully and donating the rest to schools and crafters, waste minimization is prioritized throughout their manufacturing processes. To minimize their carbon footprint, the company works with partners in Lithuania and neighboring countries. They also ensure every product is manufactured within 100 km of their warehouse, from which the orders are then shipped to customers. Aside from using biodegradable fabric, Linen Tales also developed biodegradable product packaging in 2019 with OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 and EUROPEAN FLAX® Certifications.
