Korissa

In 2017 Angela Choi left the busy streets of New York for Dhaka, Bangladesh, because of a family business. There, she dove into a new world, discovering its people and culture. One day, in a local social club, a popular spot for expats, Angela had a chance encounter that would change her life. She met a group of passionate, talented women artisans who crafted beautiful things. Angela and her co-founder Nora Kim, whom she met working on interior projects prior to her travels, vision was clear. They wanted to champion these artisans and support sustainable practices. Thus, KORISSA was born – a company with a blend of supporting traditional craft, purpose, and environmental care in the making of sustainable, socially responsible handmade goods. The name “KORISSA” holds a double significance. In Finnish, it translates to “in the basket,” echoing the handicrafts and woven stories of the artisan. It’s also known as a female name, representing strength, unity, and the community of women who come together to craft beautiful items from natural materials like jute and seagrass.

Based in New York City, KORISSA, partners with artisan organizations in Bangladesh and in Ecuador that are all Fair Trade Certified™. The company is committed to collaborating with its artisan partners working together to preserve their culture and history while providing them access to fair wages, broader markets, and secure, sustainable livelihoods. Korissa is committed to being environmentally responsible and producing less waste by using sustainable and eco-friendly materials in the production of its products and packaging. Its packaging is 100% plastic-free. The company also partners with “Onetreeplanted” a 501(c)3 reforestation non-profit out of Vermont. Each Tagua jewelry piece Korissa sells goes to planting one tree. Every purchase of a Korissa product makes a positive impact.
