In 2017 Angela Choi left New York City for Dhaka, Bangladesh in pursuit of a new career opportunity. There, she had a chance encounter with a group of passionate women artisans who inspired her to start her brand, KORISSA. Angela and her co-founder Nora Kim sought to champion these artists, supporting traditional craft, social responsibility, and environmental care.
The name “KORISSA” holds a double meaning. In Finnish, it translates to “in the basket,” echoing the woven stories of the artisan. KORISSA is also known as a female name, representing strength, unity, and the community of women who come together to practice art and creativity.
Based in New York, KORISSA partners with artisan organizations that are Fair Trade certified in Bangladesh and Ecuador. The company is committed to collaborating with its artisan partners, working together to preserve their culture and history while providing them access to fair wages, broader markets, and secure, sustainable livelihoods. KORISSA is committed to sustainability through their use of eco-friendly materials, as their packaging is 100% plastic-free. KORISSA also partners with One Tree Planted, a nonprofit organization devoted to reforestation efforts. To read more about KORISSA’s story and artisans, click here.
