Indego Africa

Indego Africa is a nonprofit social enterprise that brings African women’s handcrafted home designs to a global market. Matt Mitro founded the company in 2007, inspired by the memories of hardworking female artisans Matt met in his childhood while living in various African countries. He created the organization to address challenges with access and opportunity by helping artisans earn a sustainable income and receive an education. Since then, the company has partnered with artisan communities in Rwanda and Ghana, fusing traditional African techniques with Indego Africa’s contemporary designs.

Indego Africa’s products are composed of locally sourced, raw materials and are 100% handmade. They use natural fibers such as sweetgrass, palm leaf, bolga straw, banana leaf and organic yarn that are indigenous to the partner countries and are hand-dyed with plant material. Honoring the cultural traditions behind artisan craft, the products showcase raffia-weaving, woodcarving, hand-embroidery, wool-spinning and other heritage-based techniques. With the core belief that education is a key component of long-term economic and social change, 100% of profits are invested in the education of their partners. The company also trains artisan women and youth in Africa, empowering them to sustain independent livelihoods.
