Indego Africa

Indego Africa is a nonprofit organization that brings African women’s handcrafted home goods to a global market. Matt Mitro founded the company in 2007, inspired by the memories of hardworking female artisans he met in his childhood while living in various African countries. He created the organization to address challenges within these communities regarding income inequality and access to education. Since then, the company has partnered with artisans in Rwanda and Ghana, fusing traditional African techniques with Indego Africa’s contemporary designs.

Indego Africa’s products are composed of locally sourced, raw materials and are 100% handmade. They use fibers such as banana leaf, elephant grass, palm, raffia, sisal, and wood that are indigenous to the partner countries and are hand-dyed with plant material. Honoring the cultural traditions behind artisan craft, the products showcase raffia-weaving, woodcarving, hand-embroidery, wool-spinning, and other heritage-based techniques. With the core belief that education is a key component of long-term economic and social change, 100% of profits are invested in the education of their partners.
