Faribault Woolen Mill Co

A century-old mill that rests along the Cannon River in Minnesota, the Faribault Woolen Mill is run by fifth-generation craftspeople. Established in 1865, the company endures as one of the last vertical woolen mills in America, where they create blankets, throws, scarves and accessories from raw wool.

Their “Spread the Warmth” initiative ensures that for every blanket sold, Faribault donates a blanket to nonprofits serving unhoused youth in the US. The company’s donation efforts began during WWI, and have since continued to donate their blankets to the US military. While the company took a hit from the recession in 2009 and had to shut down, they were rescued two years later and opened once again, with most of the previous staff rehired.

The high quality of their products can be attested to by the company’s primary use of wool, which has benefits such as durability, stain resistance, and UV protection. This approach also points to the company’s sustainability mission, as wool is recyclable, biodegradable, and a renewable resource. Faribault also uses scraps to create functional accessories such as pillows or coffee sleeves, which contributes to their low-waste initiative.
