As the colder seasons wind down and summer preparations begin, this is a perfect moment to take a step back and inhale. With your own revitalization that blossoms in the spring, use this newfound energy to become more conscious of those who are less fortunate in your community and around the world. Make an impact by introducing sustainable practices into your everyday life. This can be a small act like switching over to reusable straws or it can be something greater like volunteering.
Just as spring cleaning can breathe energy into your everyday life, so can trying new recipes! To start, we recommend Bon Appetit’s Crispy Smashed Potatoes with Walnut Dressing. These potatoes are the perfect way to mix up a normal side dish using walnuts, tender herbs and sour cream. If you want to add a personal touch to this recipe, basil is a great herb to add to your garden in the late spring! You can learn more about growing herbs here. For a healthy lunch or light dinner, try Food 52’s Curried Chickpea Sandwich. In 15 minutes, you can throw together a nutritious take on a classic sandwich with fresh ingredients like celery, greens and tomatoes. If you have a sweet tooth or just want a little something to end a meal on a lighter note, consider making Food 52’s Salted Chocolate Buckwheat Cookie. With only seven ingredients, these cookies can be whipped up in no time!
Two major holidays take place in May: Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. On May 12, be sure to remember all of the mothers in your life: your own mother, mother-in-law, aunts, cousins, friends and daughters. While gifts, flowers and breakfast in bed show the mothers in your life how much you care about them, write a thank-you note or simply call them to tell them how much they mean to you. After all, that’s all they really want – to be thanked and feel loved! May 27 marks Memorial Day, the time when we reflect on those who have died for our country. To fully embrace the meaning of the day, consider viewing this old 60 Minutes clip that challenges our perceptions and encourages us to prevent war rather than just remember it.

In April, spring is in the air and this month’s mood, vitality moves through the veins of all living things. Step outside your home, embrace the warmer weather, and find motivation to connect with your personal well-being. As the month begins, think about what revitalizes you and try to implement that into your daily routine. We all would benefit tenfold if we did at least one thing every day that brought us true joy. Manifest your new-found inspiration and take action to make changes in your life and community.
To breathe vitality into your meals this month, we recommend a few dishes from Bon Appetit and Food52. For a light lunch or appetizer, try Bon Appetit’s Chopped Spring Salad. It uses a variety of nutritious ingredients, all the while providing a fabulous dressing recipe that you will use in the months to come. Nigella Lawson’s Chicken and Pea Traybake has all the flavor with none of the mess. This sheet-pan dinner comes together quickly and is a great option for a healthy weeknight meal. Finally, try a new take on caramel with Food52’s Vegan Caramel. Use to top ice cream, lightly pipe on top of your favorite cookie, or drizzle it onto sliced apples for a fun snack!
April begins with April Fool’s Day. Have fun with the pranks you can pull on friends, family, or co-workers. Don’t be afraid to get creative! The 22nd marks Earth Day, a particularly meaningful holiday at this point in history. With global warming become more apparent by the year, we encourage you to educate yourself on environmental issues and reflect on what you can change in your daily life to help the earth: recycle, compost, use only cold water to wash clothes, turn off the water while brushing your teeth, and don’t turn on lights you do not need. The Earth’s vitality depends on us! April also marks the month of a slew of religious holidays where vitality is a central theme: the 9th marks Mahavir Jayantifor the Jains, sundown on the 20th begins Passover, Christians observe Easter on the 21st, and Orthodox Christians observe Easter on the 28th. Whatever holidays you celebrate this month, use your sense of vitality to breathe new life into everything you do!
