If the idiom is correct, last month’s rains have ushered in the flowers of May — beautiful, fragrant reminders that spring is finally here in full force. Cherry blossoms, daffodils, gardenias, pansies, and lilacs are among the many, many flowers in bloom this month, so as you go about your days, keep your eyes (and nose) out.
The mood of May is radiant, a word that reflects the happenings in the outer world, and ideally, our inner selves. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary provides a variety of definitions for this word, among them “vividly bright and shining.” This definition is evident all around us — outside, the chill of the past few months has waned, and the sun is shining with increased vigor and warmth, drawing new plant growth and flowers from the earth. Merriam-Webster also defines radiant as “marked by or expressive of love, confidence, or happiness.” As the sun radiates warmth that helps plants flourish, we can radiate a warmth of our own, taking care to communicate support and positivity to those around us, becoming a bright presence in the lives of others to help them grow stronger and more vibrant. And just as the sun radiates light and warmth produced deep within itself, the warmth and brightness we share with others can also be internalized, giving ourselves the fuel we need to grow and blossom into our best selves.
This month, make use of the vegetables that are in season and try Food 52’s recipe for roasted artichokes stuffed with garlic and sage, or grilled ramps with sherry-ramp vinaigrette from Bon Appétit.
Mother’s Day, falling on May 13th, is a day when you can honor your own mother, and any other wonderful mothers in your life. May 28th is Memorial Day, when you can honor those who lost their lives while serving in the United States military, and give thanks to those who put their lives on the line for us every day. These two holidays are both centered around honoring those whose selflessness and sacrifice have helped make our lives better. By celebrating them, you allow yourself to express warmth and gratitude towards those who have helped you, becoming the very embodiment of radiance.
