A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Looking at a crisp, bright blue sky silhouetting the New York City skyline, I reflect on how fast time goes by. I am lucky to live in an extraordinary apartment in the heart of Manhattan. I remind myself how grateful I am for the opportunity to have a garden in New York City, to grow and enjoy seasonal plants and vegetables and to prepare and share memorable meals. I love the comfort of my sun-lit home and the access to the beat of creative energy New York City provides. With this in mind, I have chosen the festive, transitional and thoughtful month of November as the month of Appreciation.
There is something special about November that stimulates our senses. It marks the end of the long season of warmth and outdoor activities. The new chill and rich colorful fall produce inspire cooking fragrant apple pies, hot soups, and stews. One of our favorite soups is Emily Schuman’s Winter Minestrone Soup from her blog Cupcakes and Cashmere. As for dessert, why not celebrate the National Doughnut Day on November 5th and use up that Halloween pumpkin for unconventional and indulgent Baked Buttermilk Pumpkin Doughnuts with Hot Cocoa Glaze from the Half Baked Harvest blog?
In November, we pull out our scarves and gloves and snuggle up in our favorite warm knits. For those lucky enough to find themselves in the countryside this season, the subtle sound of falling leaves and their cheerful crunch under wandering feet bring peace of mind and cleanse the spirit.
I look forward towards the month’s end for my favorite annual holiday, Thanksgiving.
Delight in preparing and sharing a festive meal with family and friends, fueling traditions or forging new ones. And don’t forget to take a quiet moment during the day to reflect, appreciate and be grateful for all that is good in your life.
The day before Thanksgiving, November 25th is the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women. We encourage you to be aware of those less fortunate and make time to help people who cannot help themselves. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
