This past Tuesday marked the third annual Vina Croatia wine tasting event in NYC. Located at the Astor Center, a space designed primarily for wine and food events, Vina Croatia was an experience for all wine enthusiasts. The Mood of Living team was able to taste a wide selection of wines from regions all over Croatia, including Istria, Dalamatia, the Croatian Uplands and Slavonia. Most notable were Malvasia, Plavac Mali (a cross between Zinfandel and Dobricic grapes), and Teran varietals, native to Croatia.
The history of Croatian wine dates back to 2000 years ago. With once over 300 varietals, Croatia has seen a diminish in its local grapes due to disease and the introduction of foreign grapes into the terroir. While many are still unfamiliar with Croatian wine, its presence has become increasingly grown in the US. The event was a wonderful introduction into the rich history of Croatian wine, and we can’t wait to taste more in the future!
