On March 13th, Mood of Living attended the Eighth Annual Choice Eats tasting event at the Metropolitan Pavilion in NYC. Hosted by the Village Voice, Choice Eats was an occasion not to be missed by food lovers. The event featured over 65 contributors, including restaurants and bakeries from all over NYC, distilleries, breweries, and wineries, with the opportunity to sample all.
From NYC landmarks to up-and-coming restaurants, Choice Eats was a microcosm of NYC’s diverse food scene. Established restaurants such as the NoMad and Casa Mono were featured, as well as newcomers like Tuome, King Bee, and Genuine, a soon-to-open restaurant. For those with a sweet tooth, the second floor of the pavilion was filled with luscious desserts from Ample Hills Creamery, Sugar Couture, Doughnut Plant, and Robicelli’s Bakery. The atmosphere buzzed with music from a live DJ and a crowd eager to try all food and drink. Rows of tables, representing various restaurants and their culinary creations, filled the venue.
There were ahi tartare tostadas, pineapple pork bun sliders, lobster rolls, homemade horseradish pickles, chocolate milk and cookies ice cream, and even a station serving mustard from a tap. One of our favorite bites came from Papa’s Kitchen in Woodside, NY. This dish featured a traditional laing made from taro leaves, steeped in coconut milk with green finger chiles, crab meat and shrimp, served on thinly sliced Italian bread. Delightfully creamy with an added bite from the chiles, the combination of flavors and textures complimented each other wonderfully.
The festival provided great exposure for those both wishing to share their food and those waiting to taste it. We highly suggest the event for anyone interested in exploring new cuisines and experiencing the incredible food culture of NYC. Mood of Living had a fantastic time and is excited for next year’s event!
