The standard is guided by 4 core principles: promoting the use of products from organic agriculture that respect biodiversity, using natural resources responsibility to respect the environment, using clean/respectful processing and manufacturing and integrating/developing the concept of green chemistry.

COSMOS offers four different signatures for brands. COSMOS ORGANIC is available for products that comply in all respects to the standard and contain the required amounts of organic ingredients. COSMOS NATURAL are for the products that comply with the standard but do not reach the required organic amount. COSMOS CERTIFIED is available for physically/chemically processed agro-ingredients with COSMO standard organic content. COSMOS APPROVED is for non-organic raw materials that are approved based on the standard. With over 34,000 products across 78 countries, COSMOS clearly defines criteria for organic or natural cosmetics made from the highest sustainability practices.
