CRADLE TO CRADLE
assesses a product’s safety towards humans and the environment. Simultaneously, the product must also be designed for future life cycles. Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Products Innovation Institute administers a multi-attribute eco-label, so all items must abide by rules on utilizing safe materials that can be disassembled and recycled as technical nutrients or composted as biological nutrients. The certification assesses a variety of categories including: building materials, interior finishes, furniture and household products, automotive, consumer electronics, textiles and apparel, cosmetics and personal care, cleaning products, paper, packaging and polymers. This comprehensive approach ensures that products are contributing to a circular environment.

The program is based on four levels of certification, evaluating both the product design and its manufacturing processes. Manufacturing practices are thus evaluated in five categories: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy use, water stewardship, and social responsibility. Certification is awarded on four levels of ascending achievement: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Companies are independently assessed to verify performance across all categories. The certification lasts three years, and companies must demonstrate measurable improvement to recertify.
