are “learning places for sustainable development”, where social and ecological systems are studied, managed, and tested through an interdisciplinary lens. The three main functions of biosphere reserves are: (1) conservation of biodiversity and cultural diversity, (2) economic development that is socioculturally and environmentally sustainable, and (3) research, monitoring, education and training.

Biosphere reserves are nominated by national governments and operated by the states they are located in. Local communities and stakeholders are invited to be involved in planning and managing the site.
