BIFMA
is as a sustainability certification program that offers an open and transparent means of evaluating furniture. By sourcing responsibly manufactured products, BIFMA assesses the environmental and social impacts of furniture products. BIFMA also evaluates a company’s social actions, energy usage, material selection, as well as human and ecosystem health impacts.
Building materials are ranked on a numeric scale of 1-3 as a measure of their sustainability. This rating considers a multitude of factors, including the material’s climate neutrality factor, its recycled content, its efficiency of material usage, its biodegradability, its renewability and its ultimate lifecycle. To be certified by BIFMA, a piece of furniture must be thoroughly vetted by BIFMA’s third-party certifiers and deemed environmentally and socially responsible. Furthermore, BIFMA maintains standards for furniture comfort, safety, sustainability and durability.
