SMITHSONIAN BIRD FRIENDLY
ensures that certified coffee farms meet standards set by Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute for conserving sustainable habitats. The seal is mainly applicable to coffee and cacao products and promotes practices that support the preservation of habitats for birds and wildlife. Also, the standards regulate climate impacts, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable farming. All participants in the program must allow Bird Friendly to trace ingredients through various legal agreements and inspections. Participants include coffee importers, roasters and retailers. This means that this certification ensures ethical standards throughout the entire lifecycle of coffee and cacao goods. Coffee farmers are inspected by approved agencies and retain their certification for three years. Participating parties must separately handle, package and label Bird Friendly beans, guaranteeing 100% product purity and traceability, as well as reporting sales and purchases. Certified products are guaranteed to possess 100% product purity and 100% traceability regarding their production processes.
